Q - This seems like a large story. How many books are in the series?
A - I’m planning 6 books at ~600k words total and the first 2 are finished. As a strategic analyst, I usually write over a million words a year and I have a very fast writing pace. When I started putting ideas on paper for the series, I wrote a 400 page “bible” outlining the entire story. The publisher has read the first 2 books and the story bible. They don't believe I can finish the story in 4 more books, but I know I can. I should have them all done before December, 2012.
Q - How well does each volume stand on its own?
A - Each book is an installment in the story. Like the books in George R.R. Martin’s Song of Fire and Ice, plot-lines stay open and unfinished as the story builds. But like episodes of the TV drama “24,” they count down to an event/end. This story has a definite ending and it’s huge. All the resolutions to plot-lines and mysteries get wrapped up in the very last book. The concept of a cliff-hanger ending is built on this idea and I hope readers enjoy each one.
Q - What were your motivations or who are the authors that influenced how you wrote the book?
A - Once I began to develop the history and science mix that would be integral to the book, I realized there were great examples to emulate. First, I wanted to write smart science fiction with an epic story covering a huge time-frame like Isaac Asimov in the Foundation series. I also wanted to create an alternate history like Dan Brown in DaVinci Code. Then, I wanted to create an enormous universe of complex characters and interlocking plot-lines like George R.R. Martin in Song of Fire and Ice. And finally, I wanted the current timeline to run in real-time like the TV drama “24.” The series isn’t finished yet, so I don’t know if people will see these influences when they read it. But it’s what I was aiming for.
Q - Is this appropriate for young readers? How mature is the story?
A - The story contains some very graphic violence in a couple of scenes. And there are some sexually mature scenes along with general death and destruction in the story-line. It’s not to the level of true horror but it’s certainly more adult than young children should read. However, the sexually oriented scenes are NOT described in a graphic nature. Something like, “this was happening” or “they did that” as opposed to any explicit prose. But the violence, sex, murder, and even the politics of the characters are absolutely crucial to the plot of the converging time-lines over the millennia. Those aspects of our humanity are subject matter in the series. EVERY detail is important to the conclusion.
